I'm a Liverpool fan, just thought it'd be kind of fun to play around with the US player pool to create a lineup similar to the one Brendan Rogers' side is employing at the moment with three center backs, two outside "wing-backs" to compliment a 3 man triangle central midfield with 2 up top. In goal, it's really a coin toss for me right now. I go with Howard solely based on international experience. His place is by no means safe with the form Guzan is showing. In the back three I work in mr utility Cameron with our current cb pairing of Gonzo and Besler. Seeing as Cameron plays on the right for his club, I think he is the best fit here over the steady but unspectacular Goodson and the inexperienced Brooks. The wing-back role currently being utilized by LFC is perfect for the combination of Johnson and Bedoya, encouraging them to join the attack. The defensive center partnering of Jones and Bradley works if Jones decides not to do too much free-lancing and bounding forward. As exciting as it looks at times, it often leads to him turning the ball over with a heavy touch or bad pass leaving us exposed to quick counters. This would especially be the case with 2 forward thinking wing-backs. Bradley was, is, and always will be a better and more controlled attacking option than Jones. If he understood his role more as the destroyer/disrupters in front of the defense, it would allow Bradley more freedom to attack. Dempsey is the obvious choice for the role of attacking midfielder, as it gives him a lot of freedom to to roam and look for the ball. If he runs himself into the ground, which sometimes he is known to do, super sub Mix is ready to step in this role with a solid 20-30 mins. Up top, Altidore picks himself being such a big target and holder of possession. I choose Landy-cakes to play off him as I think he could do well in a role playing off Jozy, dribbling at defenders, and getting others involved. I toyed with several partners for Jozy like Johanssen and Boyd, but in the end the fact that Donovan is both a creator and finisher, plus has buckets of WC experience, made the choice a no-brainer. He also has the ability to drop in deeper to receive the ball and ignite the attack, which would take some pressure off Deuce. Boyd and Ice-Man would remain impact subs. Though obviously hypothetical, I think this could be a fluid, attractive side to watch, with good offensive/defensive balance.
