This formation works because of the midfield. As we have seen lately the US has been struggling because of a lackluster midfield mainly due to the midfield. The 3 center mids will control the pace of the game and provide support to the forwards, which has been lacking. Altidore gets Donovan as a partner up top because Altidore is a lot more efficient when he has another forward with him. The defense is solid and hopefully we will see Chandler back with the US team sometime soon.
