With an absence of true wingers, this formation brings the team's best players in close proximity centrally to allow for build-up and easier linking. It really plays closer to a 4-1-4-1, with Williams in a holding position in front of the back four and Bradley facilitating the offense. Gomez, Dempsey and Donovan will have the freedom to roam and swap sides, with Gomez also given liberty to push forward with Altidore. This also depends on Johnson and Cherundolo showing an ability to push up the flanks and provide width.
