The team that lost in Honduras was sorely lacking natural width, and was doomed to fall upon taking the field. This lineup gives the US natural width with Gatt and Donovan. Dempsey can sit in behind Jozy. Bradley and Holden can clean up in front of the defense and have the passing ability to connect with the attack. Of course, this is hopeful on Holden getting back to form. Cameron/Gonzalez should pair with Boca, whose experience is surely needed. Johnson has been good enough to keep his spot, and Cherundola is needed on the right. The problem with the US performances of late is while the individual talent level may be higher than in years past, that new talent does not possess the gritty, never die traits that have made past American sides so resilient. The German imports, while good on paper, just don't seem to possess the qualities that an American side needs. They seem disconnected and don't seem like players who are playing for their true country. This lineup is predominantly American, with a mix of youth and experience.
