Inspired by the Juventus team that made it to the UEFA Champions League final against Barcelona with a Midfield 3 pairing of Pirlo Pogba and Vidal, this team is set up in a hybrid attacking 3-5-2/3-3-3-1 formation. The closest American approximation of Pirlo, Pogba would be Bradley, Nagbe, and Williams, but unfortunately due to Williams’ exclusion from the side, Bedoya or perhaps Mccarthy would have to slide in as the closest equivalent player. Say what you will about Altidore, but he’s our best striker, so he slots in up top either alongside the pacey Wood in a 3-5-2 or alone with Wood as a Left wing. Underneath the strikers of course is the American gem, Christian Pulsic, aka our best player. On the right, hopefully providing some defense as a more natural wide mid than Wood, is Arriola. In the midfield three is the American discount edition of the Juve trio: Bradley, Nagbe, Bedoya. Hopefully they balance each other somewhat near as well as that Juventus triumvirate did. Then the back three will be shaky but hopefully wuick enough to makeup the gaps in behind the midfield: with more mobile outside center backs in Cameron and Ream and the giant Omar in the center. Keeper is a toss up, we’re probably in one of our greatest goalkeeping droughts in USMNT history. Hamid or Johnson could probably walk in and challenge for the starting job. In lieu of those two, Howard was poor against Costa Rica and is dropped for Guzan.
