When you play with a back three it usually means you're willing to press your opposition high up the field, so you need players who can step up and play in midfield if need be, which is why Kitchen and O'Neill get the nod here. By having Yedlin on the right you can shift the defense into a back four if need be (becoming a 4-3-3 of sorts) and gives Dempsey defensive cover. This group is a good mix of experience and youth. I'm a big fan of giving young players a chance in international friendlies. Why not see what these guys can do? You call them in to get experience and play, not sit around and watch.
