Much like the USMNT, much of the talent on the teams they’ll face in the Hex plays for top European clubs. Each week, we’ll take a look at how several players performed. The list isn’t all-inclusive, but seeks to include all players who American fans could see square off against the USMNT.

Chicharito notched a brace for Manchester United in their FA Cup victory against Fulham, scoring the third and fourth goals. Both were pretty nice finishes.

Speaking of nice finishes, fellow Mexican Gio dos Santos scored a great goal for his club, Mallorca, for the second consecutive week. He took a free kick outside the 18 which he blasted over the wall but somehow got down almost immediately into the goal. Mallorca fell to Málaga, 3-2.

Jamaican Garath McCleary put the cap on Reading’s 4-0 FA Cup win against Sheffield United and also assisted the prior goal. (An argument could be made that he should get the assist on the second as well.)

Teammate with both club and country Adrian Mariappa played the full 90 as well in defense. Jobi McAnuff was an unused substitute. Reading drew Man United in the next round.

Country Breakdowns

Costa Rica: Joel Campbell again was issued a yellow card in this weekend’s Real Betis match, his second straight. He started and played 68 minutes in a 3-0 defeat.

Fulham utilized Bryan Ruiz in a more advanced role than usual in their loss to Manchester United, but he couldn’t score and was replaced in the 71st minute.

Bryan Oviedo didn’t play in Everton’s FA Cup victory over Bolton.

Keylor Navas was Levante’s backup keeper in a victory.

Honduras: Emilio Izaguirre went the full 90 for Celtic as usual, but it was a tough weekend for the Scottish powers who fell to St. Mirren in the league cup semifinals.

Jorge Claros didn’t fare much better in Scotland as he “wasn’t in the right frame of mind to play,” according to Hibernian manager Pat Fenlon ,who dropped him from the team. Hibs are trying to sign him, but so far have only been able to convince Montagua to extend his loan to the end of the season.

Maynor Figueroa wore the armband for Wigan in central defense as the club beat Macclesfield Town, 1-0 in a FA Cup match. He and Roger Espinoza each went the full 90 in the victory and both picked up yellow cards.

Carlo Costly started and played the whole match for Veria in Greece but didn’t score in a 2-0 loss to PAS Giannina. Veria has a cup match Wednesday morning.

Andy Najar scored for Anderlecht’s reserve squad Friday but is expected back in the nation’s capital this week after his month-long loan from D.C. United ends.

Wilson Palacios still isn’t playing for Stoke and still hasn’t transferred to QPR.

In a note semi-related to this column, Walter Martinez is training with the Colorado Rapids.

Jamaica: Marlon King started for Birmingham and the decision paid off as he put in a rocket to beat Burnley in the final minute. You can watch a shaky video of someone’s television showing the goal here:

Dane Richards made it back on the Burnley bench but did not play in the match.

Rodolph Austin played all of Leeds’ 2-1 FA Cup upset of American Clint Dempsey and Tottenham Hotspur, living up to his reputation as a physical player with several bruising tackles.

Nyron Nosworthy had several contributions including a few shot attempts for Watford in a 3-0 win at Nottingham Forest.

Ricardo Fuller was substituted into the Charlton side after they went down 2-1 in the waning moments of the match. Strangely, Fuller was one of three players who entered the match in the 90th minute for Charlton, who apparently were really hoping for a draw.

Motherwell hasn’t played since last time we met, so the only news to report is Omar Daley was called up for Jamaica’s game against Mexico. Chris Humphrey was not.

Nathan Smith went the full 90 as Chesterfield lost to Southend.

Keammar Daley is yet to find a club.

Mexico: Valencia were poor last week, but Andres Guardado and company bounced back against his former club, Deportivo La Coruña. Guardado assisted the winning goal, putting in a ball that Ricardo Costa headed in for a winner in the final minute.

Hector Moreno and the Espanyol defense kept Zaragoza off the board in a scoreless draw in a match that saw a red card issued to each side late. Moreno went the full 90 at CB.

It was an average weekend for Carlos Vela who had three shots in Real Sociedad’s 1-1 draw against Celta Vigo. He declined another call up to El Tri.

Guillermo Ochoa got hung out to dry and made a poor decision to come off his line. Evian took advantage and got the equalizer in a 1-1 draw with Ochoa’s Ajaccio.

We’ll soon be adding young Javier Aquino to this feature, as he’s leaving Cruz Azul for Villarreal, a move announced Monday.

Panama: Yairo Yau came on as a late sub for Sydney FC in a 3-1 loss to Melbourne Victory.
