Tuesday’s yawn-inspiring draw has fans a little sour on the team with a World Cup qualifier just five days away, but Jonah Freedman makes some arguments as to why the USMNT may be in better shape than we think. Jozy Altidore’s finishing (and stunning maturity), Clint Dempsey’s form, and Timmy Chandler’s presence are all things we should hold our heads up about. However, the August win at the Azteca probably doesn’t mean as much as Freedman seems to believe. Yes, that broken curse should get the group up for tough road games, but they proceeded to lose in Jamaica a month later. So, who really knows?
D.C. United signed Ben Olsen to a contract extension that runs through the 2014 season. In just his second full season in charge, the 35-year-old led United to its first playoff appearance in five years.
Brent Latham looks at Mexican clubs’ unwillingness to sell young players to European sides. “There’s plenty of talent in Mexico. Rather than being unreasonable, clubs need to learn when to let theirs go,” Latham says. Many have criticized MLS for the same thing, which probably does stunt the growth of young American players, although this past transfer window shows MLS perhaps loosening up this policy. Mexico, it seems, should follow suit.
Terrence Boyd and Rapid Vienna won the Atlantic Cup, a three-team friendly tournament staged in Portugal during winter break. Boyd scored a goal in the 89th minute of the final match against Denmark’s Silkeborg IF to give his side a 2-1 win and clinch the tournament. So naturally, he Instagrammed a picture of himself with the big trophy.
