FC Dallas has quietly built one of the most talented rosters in MLS, but is this a team built to win trophies?
Kenny Cooper and Eric Hassli—acquired in trades on the same day—join Blas Pérez to make one of the most formidable front lines in the league. The trio combined for 32 goals last year. The players are similar enough—all physically imposing men who feed off the service of others—that using all three at the same time seems unlikely. Eric Hassli might be the one coming off the bench, though that seems like an odd role for a designated player. The problem may take care of itself due to national team commitments and injuries, but it’s worth watching.
The back line, led by George John and Matt Hedges, is also solid. The questions are in midfield following the departure of Brek Shea. Who will provide service to those big strikers? David Ferreira, 34, is the obvious answer, but he will have to remain healthy and prove he can continue to play at a high level approximating his 2010 MLS form. Pressure will also be on 20-year-old Fabián Castillo, who showed promise last year.
EXPECTED FINISH: 4th in Western Conference. Dallas has plenty of promise, but an injury, especially in midfield, could quickly throw this team out of balance.
