ASN Morning Read: Petke Out. You Sure About This?

The New York Red Bulls do what they do so well and screw everything up just when it might have been okay; a United States national team star to Major League Soccer?; Alejandro Bedoya is rather good.

  • In a move that would make zero sense in the real world but 100 percent sense because of the team involved, the New York Red Bulls fired head coach Mike Petke: "Petke, who in two years as head coach of the club delivered the Supporters Shield, in 2013, and took the team to within a game of the MLS Cup this past season, was relieved of his duties on Tuesday. A team source tells Metro New York that new sporting director Ali Curtis was the one who relieved Petke of his duties after meeting with the head coach at Red Bull Arena." His ousting prompted a great number of soccer writers to start tweeting uncontrollably:

  • Mix Diskerud might be coming to NYCFC, which would make ASN editor-in-chief John Godfrey a happy, happy man. (As it should; Diskerud in New York could give the team a boost.) Diskerud almost signed with the Portland Timbers and the Columbus Crew but last-minute snags that may or may not have involved his father, who may or may not be a loan shark, derailed that momentum.

  • Some moron wants to know if Alejandro Bedoya is the future of the United States men's national team: "Today, Bedoya’s in a position with the U.S. team that would’ve been hard to envision three years ago. Six years ago, it would’ve been impossible. Yet we now live in a world where Alejandro Bedoya is one of the best American players alive. And his coach seems pleased with the progress of a player who embodies the type of bullheadedness he so desperately wants."

  • Devin Pleuler explains how Clint Dempsey is more important than Michael Bradley. Or something. We're not 100 percent sure, but it's fascinating regardless.

  • Olympic roster? Olympic roster.

  • DeAndre Yedlin earns a FIFA.com profile: "By the time he replaced injured Fabian Johnson in the Round of 16 against Belgium, Yedlin’s uncommon athleticism in the right-back position had Chelsea star Eden Hazard sitting back on his heels." Gosh, those things are absurd.

  • Let's all stop talking about it until he gets here?
