If it hasn’t happened already, someday soon Schellas Hyndman is going to be known as Emerson Hyndman’s grandfather instead of Emerson being known as Schellas’ grandson.

Schellas, of course, is the highly regarded American soccer coach, first for almost three decades at college power Southern Methodist and then with FC Dallas, where he was MLS Coach of the Year and led the club to its only appearance in MLS Cup.

Watching all those practices and games over the years, Emerson clearly soaked up enough tactical prowess to be a regular with various U.S. youth national teams and at 15 he joined the academy of English club Fulham.

In 2014, at just 18, he debuted both with Fulham, where he began the season as one of the club’s starting central midfielders, and with the U.S. senior team, for which he received his first cap in September’s friendly against the Czech Republic in Prague.

Though not physically imposing, Hyndman always seems to be in the right place and plays the way you’d expect a coach’s grandkid to play. With European soccer, more national team appearances and, likely, the 2016 Olympics looming, Emerson’s grandfather is going to have a lot to be proud of.
