NEWCASTLE UNITED and United States national team fans can breathe easier today after Newcastle announced that right back DeAndre Yedlin’s knee injury is “not serious.”

While specific details were not given, this rules out a tear to his anterior cruciate ligament which likely would have kept him out for the season. The only additional information provided in the release is that Yedlin “has been assessed and undergone treatment this week and is likely to resume training with his team-mates shortly.”

Whether or not Yedlin is fit for the September friendlies for the U.S. team, the Seattle native should be ready to go for October or November.

Yedlin, 25, started the Premier League season opener for Newcastle on Saturday against his former club Tottenham but came off in stoppage time after suffering his knee injury. Tottenham ended up winning 2-1 and Yedlin reportedly left the stadium on crutches.

The weekend was a very good one for Americans in Europe but fears over the severity of Yedlin’s injury overshadowed the progress made by players such as Tim Weah and Emmanuel Sabbi. With Yedlin likely set to miss only a short amount of time, American fans can certainly relax a bit.
