Draw does it for Vancouver

The Vancouver Whitecaps survived a scoreless draw against FC Dallas on Wednesday, clinching a playoff spot in the process. The result lifted Dallas to the top spot in the Western Conference with 51 points, ahead of the Los Angeles Galaxy. Three spots remain in play out west, with six sides still vying for them.

Not enough of an Impact

Montreal played two games this week, falling to the New York Red Bulls, 2-1, on Wednesday and then rebounding with a 1-0 victory over Colorado on Saturday.

Didier Drogba scored on a penalty against the Red Bulls but Sacha Kjlestan also scored from the spot and Lloyd Sam’s deft chip extended the Red Bulls’ lead in the Supporter’s Shield standings. Kjlestan had a chance to score a second PK but some gamesmanship from Drogba seemed to affect his composure.

Drogba came up big on Saturday, scoring on a 30-yard free kick to give the Impact a 1-0 road victory. Drogba has now scored nine goals in his last nine games, transforming the Impact into a legitimate MLS Cup contender along the way.

Montreal’s win ended NYCFC’s faint playoff hopes but Orlando City FC still has a chance to sneak in with two games remaining. Montreal still has to face the New England Revolution and Toronto FC–two sides still in the playoff hunt–while Orlando will face two eliminated sides: NYCFC and the Philadelphia Union.

Best Save of the week

Evan Bush produced several key saves to help keep the Impact ahead, the most crucial one coming on Lucas Pittinari’s low rocket in the 93rd minute (3:04 of video below).

Drogba approved:

Worst save of the week

The Impact lost to the Red Bulls on Wednesday in part because it played majority of the game with 10 men. Defender Ambroise Oyongo tried to take matters into his own hands to prevent Bradley Wright-Phillips deflected effort from crossing the goal line.

He earned a red card for his efforts.

Post-CONCACAF Cup Roster Moves

Jurgen Klinsmann released eight players from national team camp after Saturday’s crushing 3-2 loss to Mexico, and the MLS playoff hunt likely influenced some of the decisions. For the Wednesday fixtures, Real Salt Lake will have Nick Rimando and Kyle Beckerman back for its game against Portland while Michael Bradley (but not Jozy Altidore) will be back with Toronto to face the Red Bulls.

Here are the rest of the MLS ins and outs:

Released: DaMarcus Beasley (Houston Dynamo); Matt Besler and Graham Zusi (Sporting Kansas City); Clint Dempsey (Seattle Sounders); and Chris Wondolowski (San Jose Earthquakes).

Called In: Mix Diskerud (New York City FC); Bill Hamid (D.C. United); Lee Nguyen (New England Revolution); Brek Shea (Orlando City SC)
