U.S. SOCCER IS EXPECTED to announce its roster for January's national team training camp later today, but American Soccer Now has learned of one major surprise on the roster: Syracuse goalkeeper Alex Bono.

Bono, profiled on ASN in October, was in St. Louis for the Hermann Trophy ceremony when he received a call from Jurgen Klinsmann asking him to join the training camp. D.C. United's Bill Hamid had to pull out due to a shoulder injury.

The Baldwinsville, N.Y., native has never made an appearance for any U.S. youth team.

The Generation Adidas prospect accepted, and will be flying from St. Louis to Fort Lauderdale, Fla., to play in one MLS Combine game before joining the United States camp on Monday. Klinsmann has previously stated that he will invite 10 or so U-23 eligible players to the camp, and Bono would qualify as one such athlete.

That's a lot of frequent flyer miles for the 20-year-old talent, and a huge opportunity as well.

What do you think of this development? Glad to see see Klinsmann reaching out to some different players? Tell us below.
