Sargent, Long, Cannon, & CCV earn high marks in 1-1 draw vs. Peru

The United States national team played to a 1-1 draw against Peru on Tuesday night in Hartford. The team was very young and very inexperienced and for long stretches, it showed. But there were a lot of encouraging signs as well

THE UNITED STATES national team allowed a late equalizer to finish with a 1-1 draw against Peru on Tuesday night n Hartford. It was a frustrating game at times but also one which showed promise.

The U.S. team started three teenagers and had three players making their international debuts. Only two players have played for the U.S. team in non-friendlies and eight of the eleven players made their debut after last year’s loss against Trinidad & Tobago.

In the end, the U.S. team played like a team with most players having never played with each other. There were a lot of mistakes on the night and a lot of glimpses of talent.

The Starting Lineup

Brad Guzan: Lucked out on the Polo shot in the 76th minute which rattled the bar. There was little he could do on the goal. Best save in stoppage time to preserve the draw. Rating: 6.0

Reggie Cannon: The FC Dallas right back acquitted himself well in his first national team cap. In the second half he got forward more often and defensively he was very steady. He’s made a strong case to be Yedlin’s backup. Rating: 6.5

Cameron Carter-Vickers: He looked very comfortable and sharp despite a lack of playing time with Swansea. At just 20, he was the most experienced player on the backline and showed important leadership. Rating: 7.0

Aaron Long: The New York Red Bulls central defender is in line to be considered for the league’s defender of the year. He showed why against Peru. He did not put in a wrong foot all game. Rating: 7.0

Ben Sweat: Sweat had some bad moments in the first with the ball but defensively he was steady and in the second half he put in a well-rounded outing: Rating: 6.0

Will Trapp: The Columbus Crew captain was again a mixed bag. He doesn’t seem to do well when the game is physical or in tight spaces. He was okay in the second half when the U.S. had more possession and Trapp had time but he didn’t do what he had to in order to silence his critics. Rating: 4.5

Tim Weah: The Paris St. Germain attacker made some decent runs and helped in the first half but overall he failed to standout. Rating: 5.5

Marky Delgado: The Toronto FC midfielder, like most of the team, had some good and bad moments in the first half. He improved quite a bit in the second half and seemed to connect well to help the U.S. have more possession. Rating: 6.0

Kellyn Acosta: The Colorado Rapids central midfielder was a mixed back in the first half. He did some decent things but also turned it over way too much. He had a nice assist to Sargent on the first goal. He eventually left with what appeared to be a leg or hip injury. Rating: 5.5

Jonathan Amon: The South Carolina native played very well in his first cap. He has some areas he has to work on, for sure. His defense wasn’t great and sometimes with the ball he tried to do too much or he waited too long to pass. But the skill, the speed, the vision of his runs was obvious. He’s a very exciting prospect indeed. Rating: 6.0

Josh Sargent: A very nice outing from the St. Louis native. In the second half his nice hold up play in the 47th minute to set up Weah for a chance. Minutes later he scored on a free kick delivery from Acosta. He was very comfortable on the ball. Rating: 7.5

Substitutes

Julian Green: Replaced Amon in the 53rd minute. The Greuther Furth man did not have the explosiveness of Amon but he also brought some nice maturity in his decisions to play the ball forward, hold it, or make a safe pass. Rating: 5.5

Bobby Wood: Replaced Sargent in the 69th minute. The Hawaiian came on and had a few nice touches. His best moment came when he moved down the right side of the box and had a deflected pass that set up Sweat for a shot. Rating: 5.5

Michael Bradley: Replaced Kellyn Acosta in the 76th minute. The long-time captain didn’t have a great final 15 minutes. He made some nice clearances but the U.S. team was on its heels during the entire time. Rating: 4.5

DeAndre Yedlin: Replaced Cannon in the 85th. Despite only a few minutes, Yedlin’s mistake losing his man on the far post resulted in the equalizing goal. Rating: 4.0

Antonee Robinson: Replaced Weah in the 9t0th minute. The speedy left back only got a few minutes and did not do anything of note. Rating: NR
