Apparently there was an NFL game on TV last night. We didn't follow it—around here we prefer a different breed of futbol—but some U.S. national team players watched as Johnny Unitas and the Baltimore Colts took on Colin Wondolowski and the San Francisco Earthquakes.
New York Red Bulls midfielder and first ballot USMNT Social Media Hall of Famer Dax McCarty pre-gamed in Midtown Manhattan at one of the best musicals of the 21st century—The Book of Mormon. (ASN saw it with the original cast, but we're sure that Adrian Zmed and Richard Greico are just as good as Andrew Rannells and Josh Gad.)
After watching the matinee, McCarty tweeted during the Super Bowl that he was "Wacko for Flacco," whatever that means.
He wasn't alone in his desire to convey to the world that he was one of 375 billion carbon-based life forms watching the Super Bowl last night. Jozy Altidore, Herculez Gomez, Carlos Bocanegra, Brad Evans, Maurice Edu, Heath Pearce, Joe Gyau, Lee Nguyen, Stuart Holden and many more tweeted about the national anthem, the coin toss, the commercials, the Ray Lewis dance, and, oh yeah, the game. For a comprehensive and up-to-the-second collection of their (occasionally embarrassing) tweets, you should bookmark this page immediately.
The important business of today, of course, is THE ROSTER. We're expecting Jurgen Klinsmann to announce the 23 (+/-2) players for the Hexagonal opener in Honduras some time this morning. Donovan is a No. Besler is an emphatic Yes. And three points on the road to start the Hex would be huge. Keep coming back to American Soccer Now every 30 seconds or so to see what's what between, oh, now and October 15.
It gets better, though.
ASN has partnered with Ludus Tours to give you and a friend two different ways to win a free World Cup Experience, including up to six nights lodging for two in Rio de Janeiro, VIP hospitality, and two tickets to a World Cup match—all free.
If you want to re-read that last sentence, go right ahead.
It's all true.
Our Starting XI contest will allow you to match wits against other U.S. soccer supporters: Just predict who Jurgen Klinsmann will choose for his starting lineups across the Hexagonal and you and a friend could be living it up in Brazil next June. Our Facebook sweepstakes requires less research: After you Like us and sign up for the sweeps, we'll select a name randomly and the lucky winner and a friend will be on his/her way to the 2014 World Cup.
All told, four people win. We think it's pretty cool, and we're excited to see all of your Starting XIs just as soon as the ros-ter, ros-ter, ros-ter is announced.
