Michael Parkhurst and Nordsjælland were bounced out of the Champions League after a 6-1 defeat to Chelsea. But the Blues are going home as well, so there's that. The only American to reach the knockout stage of the Champions League is Jermaine Jones because of course. (Update: Brilliant reader Brian Daly notes that Oguchi Onyewu and Malaga also advanced. He's correct.) For what it's worth, we're all in on Celtic.
There's plenty of action in Europa League including Josh Gatt taking on Stuttgart (by himself), Clint Dempsey against Panathinaikos, and Terrence Boyd versus Metalist.
Greg Seltzer wonders if Clarence Goodson, Frank Simek, and Robbie Findley could be headed back to Major League Soccer during the winter transfer window. That would be fun, wouldn't it?
Speaking of MLS, the league is serious about getting a stadium in Queens. “Our goal is to be one of the top soccer leagues in the entire world by 2022,” Commissioner Don Garber said during a 30-minute presentation on Tuesday. “This stadium will help us achieve that. You can’t be a dominant soccer league without having a dominant team in the largest and most important city in the world.” The league hopes construction begins in 2014 with a team starting to play in 2016. But can you wait that long for the Cosmos?
