Losses, Time On Bench Pile Up for Top-Tier Americans

It was a curious weekend for Americans abroad as most of the positive stories came from unlikely places—including Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, and the Ukraine. Brian Sciaretta provides the details here.

IN THE BUNDESLIGA injuries are the predominant story as John Brooks, Fabian Johnson, and Timothy Chandler are all on the mend. Johnson’s Borussia Monchengladbach team has tumbled into last place without a point this season—and the club made a coaching change on Sunday, sacking Lucien Favre.

The two American starters in the Bundesliga right now are Alfredo Morales at Ingolstadt and Aron Johannsson at Werder Bremen. On Saturday, the two squared off against each other Ingolstadt came away with a 1-0 victory on a late goal.

On Tuesday, however, the news was not as good for Ingolstadt as it dropped a 1-0 decision at home to Hamburg SC.

One tier below in the 2.Bundesliga, Andrew Wooten has cooled off a bit. On Saturday he started for Sandhausen in a 2-0 loss to Nurnberg and on Tuesday he was held scoreless in a 1-1 draw against 1860 Munich.

Bobby Wood also failed to get on the score sheet for Union Berlin in a 2-1 home loss to Greuther Furth.

There are signs that more Americans will be part of the 2.Bundesliga season as newcomer Fafa Picault came off the bench for promotion-contending St. Pauli in a scoreless draw. Midfielder Shawn Berry meanwhile was a 66th-minute substitute for FSV Frankfurt in a 1-0 win over NSV Duisburg.

Over the weekend in the Premier League, Geoff Cameron had a shaky second half and was part of a Stoke City collapse that saw its 2-0 lead fade into a 2-2 draw against Leicester. Brad Guzan started for Aston Villa in a 1-0 home loss to West Bromwich Albion while Tim Howard earned a shutout for Everton in a scoreless draw against Swansea.

Two American defenders in the English Championship ended up on the wrong side of their respective scorelines. Eric Lichaj started for Notthingham Forest in a 2-1 loss to Middlesbrough while Tim Ream was part of Fulham’s 3-2 loss to Sheffield Wednesday.

The news wasn’t any better in France as Alejandro Bedoya started and played 78 minutes on Saturday against Saint Etienne but Nantes lost its third game in a row and has tumbled to 16th place in Ligue 1.

In Mexico the news was even worse for American players. Ventura Alvarado, Joe Corona, William Yarbrough, and Jose Torres were all unused substitutes while Greg Garza is out injured for the rest of 2015. Michael Orozco went a full 90 and Paul Arriola played the final 27 minutes in Tijuana’s loss to Club Leon. Edgar Castillo started for Monterrey in a 3-1 loss to Tigres and Jonathan Bornstein had a similar fate as he started for Queretaro in a 2-1 loss to Chivas.

The one American who saw the field in a win over the weekend in Liga MX was Miguel Ibarra, who played just one minute for first-place Club Leon its 2-1 win over Tijuana.

Yedlin makes Sunderland debut

After leaving Tottenham at the end of August on a season-long loan to Premier League cellar dwellers Sunderland, DeAndre Yedlin debuted for his new club on Tuesday in a third round League Cup match against a Manchester City.

The Seattle native started at right back in a lopsided loss that saw Man City jump out to a 4-0 lead in the first half. Sunderland pulled one goal back as Yedlin’s cross found Ola Toivonen in the 83rd minute to finish the scoring at 4-1.

Yedlin gave a decent but flawed performance. As with many of his displays with the U.S. national team, Yedlin looked impressive going forward but his defense was suspect at. For just his second club appearance of 2015 and against one of the world’s most powerful teams, it went about as well as could be expected.

Two Yanks Score on Tuesday

Aron Johannsson scored his second Bundesliga goal, and his first from the run of play, in a 2-1 midweek loss to newly promoted Darmstadt. The Icelandic-American put his team up 1-0 in the 19th minute when he got on the end of a Theodor Gebre Selassie cross and headed it home from close range.

Though not a regular starter in the Eredivisie, FC Utrecht’s Rubio Rubin earned the start on Tuesday in a second round Dutch Cup match against third-tier ONS Sneek. In the fourth minute of second-half stoppage time, Rubin found the back of the net to secure a 2-0.

The 19-year-old forward from Beaverton, Ore., has appeared in four of Utrecht’s six league matches this season but has yet to make a start. The club declined to release Rubin for the United States U-23 team’s upcoming World Cup qualifying tournament.

Horvath continues to impress

After helping Molde get by Fenerbache in midweek action, the goalkeeper picked up a clean sheet in Sunday’s win over Norwegian leaders Rosenborg.

With Cody Cropper injured, will Horvath lay claim to the starting spot for the U.S. U-23 Olympic qualifying team? It’s entirely possible.

However it plays out, it’s rare to see a 20-year-old goalkeeper earning consistent first-team minutes—domestically or abroad. Even better: Horvath is taking full advantage of his opportunities.

Three Yanks Score in Eastern Europe

Bjorn Maars Johnsen—The former standout of the North Carolina youth scene is on fire as of late. On September 12, he scored for Litex Lovech in a 2-0 win over Botev Plovdiv. On Friday, he scored again for Litex in a 1-0 win over Cherno More to help his club remain at the top of the Bulgarian table. On Tuesday, however, he scored a wonder goal in the Bulgarian Cup from 40 yards as Litex cruised past Lokomotiv Mezdra in a 3-0 win.

Nermin Crnkic—The former Michigan Buck product scored the opening goal for Jablonec in a 2-1 win over Banik Ostrava. It was the speedy left winger’s first goal of the season as Jablonec moved into fourth place in the Czech Republic’s top flight.

Eugene Starikov—The forward who received a 2011 national team call-up now starts for Chornomorets in Ukraine’s Premier League. On Sunday he scored in the 45th minute in a 1-1 away draw against Hoverla. It was Starikov’s first appearance of the season and he played a full 90 in the draw. Chornomorets is in 13th place in the 14-team Premier League.
