Beckerman, Brad Evans Return to National Team

Clint Dempsey, Jermaine Jones, and Jozy Altidore will miss Wednesday's international "friendly" against Mexico in San Antonio, but veterans Kyle Beckerman and Brad Evans are on the 22-man squad.

SOMEWHERE ABOVE SAN ANTONIO—Where will the goals come from?

With its top two domestic forwards unavailable because of injury and suspension and most of its European-based contingent staying with their clubs, the U.S. roster for Wednesday’s friendly against arch-rival Mexico leaves major questions—and opportunities—at the forward position.

Seattle Sounders forward Clint Dempsey is nursing a hamstring injury and Toronto FC’s Jozy Altidore is suspended for the silly red card he got against Switzerland, so head coach Jurgen Klinsmannis in a bind. The German opted for a collection of forwards that features a player returning to the national team fold after over a year in the international wilderness, a pair of World Cup veterans on either side of the career spectrum, an up-and-comer who has shown promising flashes in his brief national team looks this year, and an amateur.

New England Revolution forward Juan Agudelo, who went months without a club and almost a year without a first-team game, returns to the national team for the first time since a friendly last March against the Ukraine. But Agudelo, who is somehow still just 22, has shown flashes in MLS, including a sweet goal eight days ago. With Altidore and Dempsey unavailable, the door is wide open for him to earn his 19th cap.

Here's the full roster.

GOALKEEPERS

Bill Hamid (D.C. United), Nick Rimando (Real Salt Lake), William Yarbrough (Club Leon)

DEFENDERS

Ventura Alvarado (Club America), Matt Besler (Sporting Kansas City), Brad Evans (Seattle Sounders FC), Greg Garza (Club Tijuana), Omar Gonzalez (LA Galaxy), Michael Orozco (Puebla), Brek Shea (Orlando City SC), DeAndre Yedlin (Tottenham Hotspur)

MIDFIELDERS

Kyle Beckerman (Real Salt Lake), Michael Bradley (Toronto FC), Joe Corona (Club Tijuana), Mix Diskerud (New York City FC), Miguel Ibarra (Minnesota United FC), Lee Nguyen (New England Revolution)

FORWARDS

Juan Agudelo (New England Revolution), Julian Green (Hamburg), Jordan Morris (Stanford University), Chris Wondolowski (San Jose Earthquakes), Gyasi Zardes (LA Galaxy)

If Agudelo starts against El Tri, who partners with him is up in the air. The Los Angeles Galaxy’s Gyasi Zardes, who has appeared in all four U.S. games this year after making his national team debut in January, is the obvious choice. Other options include 32-year-old Chris Wondolowski, who has played well for San Jose but has struggled in recent appearances in a U.S. shirt, and Julian Green, the 19-year-old who continues to get U.S. call-ups despite having a disastrous club campaign that has seen him benched by a team bound for relegation in Germany.

Stanford’s Jordan Morris, who turned down a homegrown contract from the Sounders this winter to stay in school, continues to get rewarded for not turning pro with another call-up from Klinsmann.

Because this match does not take place on a FIFA date set aside for national team play, most of the European-based players weren’t available for selection. Aside from Green, the only other European-based player on the U.S. roster is Tottenham right back DeAndre Yedlin, who made his England Premier League debut yesterday but is curiously flying to Texas this week rather than trying to secure his first-team place.

He is part of a defensive corps called in that features fellow World Cup veterans Omar Gonzalez of the Los Angeles Galaxy and Sporting Kansas City’s Matt Besler, as well as Mexico-based Ventura Alvarado of Club America, Michael Orozco of Puebla, and Greg Garza of Tijuana Xolos.

The midfield will be anchored by Michael Bradley and New York City FC’s Mix Diskerud, with fellow World Cup veteran Kyle Beckerman appearing for the first time since 2014.

The U.S. faces Mexico, its bitter rival, Wednesday at 8:30 ET on Fox Sports 1. American Soccer Now will be on site in San Antonio all week and will provide updates beginning tomorrow. Here's the full roster.
