Jozy Altidore Out, Matt Besler and Clint Dempsey In

The United States men's national team is hobbled but not as badly as it could be. Meanwhile, Major League Soccer players suffer injuries, too. The stars are just like us.

In the U.S. national team’s opening World Cup match against Ghana, Jozy Altidore pulled up clutching his left hamstring in the 21st minute and had to be stretchered off the field. The injury is a strain and the striker underwent a scan on Tuesday. He has officially been ruled out of Sunday’s game against Portugal.

In the same match U.S. captain Clint Dempsey's nose was broken when when he took a shin to the face from Ghanaian defender John Boye in the 32nd minute. Despite breathing problems, he was able to play out the rest of the game, helping the U.S. to a closely contested 2-1 victory. After undergoing an MRI on Tuesday, Dempsey has been cleared for the Portugal game, though it’s currently unclear whether he’ll play with a protective mask or not.

Matt Besler was another casualty from the Ghana game. The central defender experienced tightness in his right hamstring five minutes before half time and was substituted as a precaution during the break. Besler also underwent tests on Tuesday and has been declared fit to play on Sunday.

Back in the U.S. it was all about the Open Cup this week. After four league games out with a calf injury, Mike Magee returned to full training this week and started for the Chicago Fire’s U.S. Open Cup match against the Pittsburgh Riverhounds on Wednesday. Magee scored in the 40th minute to put the Fire 2-1 ahead going into halftime, before inclement weather brought the match to a halt and the victory to Chicago.

In Sporting KC’s 2-0 win over the Houston Dynamo, Benny Feilhaber landed awkwardly on his shoulder after a hard tackle and had to be subbed off at half time. X-rays revealed that the veteran midfielder sprained the acromioclavicular joint in his left shoulder, which fortunately won’t require surgery. Feilhaber missed SKC’s 2-0 victory over Minnesota United on Thursday evening. On Saturday he told the Kansas City Star that he could return for the side’s next league game on June 27, saying this: “I’d love to be back for the Portland game, but I won’t know until later. The shoulder is still pretty sore, but (it’s) feeling better every day, little by little.”

Jay Demerit had to be helped off the pitch after 25 minutes of the Vancouver Whitecaps’ 3-3 draw against the Philadelphia Union on June 7. Last Thursday the club confirmed that the team skipper picked up a tendon tear in his left ankle and had opted for non-surgery rehabilitation, ruling him out for at least six weeks.

Last week midfielder Justin Mapp missed the Montreal Impact’s 4-2 league loss to D.C. United due to a groin injury. The Impact next face Vancouver on June 25.

Still out with a knee injury, Dax McCarty played no part on the New York Red Bulls 3-0 upset loss to the local rivals the New York Cosmos on Saturday. Last week McCarty discussed the injury on Over the Ball, describing it as “a very small fracture” in his knee cap and setting the Toronto FC match on June 27 as his ideal return date.

Wil Trapp, rehabbing a knee strain, hung out with Columbus Crew supporters for his side’s Tuesday cup tie against Indy Eleven. Despite picking up two red cards, the Crew managed to edge out a dramatic 2-1 win with an extra time penalty and advance to the fifth round.

Kelyn Rowe did not travel for the New England Revolution’s 3-2 win against the Richmond Kickers yesterday because to the hamstring tightness that has been dogging him throughout the season. The Rev’s next host the Philadelphia Union on June 28.

Matt Hedges played no part in FC Dallas’ 2-0 win over the San Antonio Scorpions because of a hamstring injury. Head Coach Oscar Pareja had this to say about Hedges on Monday: “Getting much better, Matt is very close to being back in the competition."

What about Hedges’ teammate George John? The central defender remains sidelined with knee issues. Soccerly reported on Friday that John was recently sent to the Kansas City Chiefs’ training facility to continue his recovery. Pareja said this about the player’s long road to fitness: “It has been more complex than I wanted. For me, it seems like it’s an endless thing. It’s frustrating. For respect for the player, we are waiting on that final decision to see what road we’re going."

Finally, Stuart Holden posted this montage video on Facebook Thursday as the Bolton Wanderers midfielder continues to rehab his right knee injury. The 28-year-old who is currently covering the World Cup with ESPN is aiming to make Bolton’s preseason training in late June and play again for the club in the fall.
