Bornstein part of improbable win
Bob Bradley's favorite left back, Jonathan Bornstein, is making quite the comeback. The 30-year-old Torrance, Calif., native has enjoyed a terrific month with Querétaro, emerging as a starter and helping the hottest club in Liga MX to an unlikely four-game winning streak.
Querétaro has been playing well but even its most optimistic fans couldn’t have expected what happened on Saturday when the team rolled into Azteca and demolished Club America 4-0. Bornstein played a full 90 in the win and Ronaldinho scored two goals.
The win lifted Querétaro into eighth place and within striking distance of a playoff spot.
Williams impressive in FA Cup loss
Reading’s FA Cup run ended in heartbreaking fashion Saturday when goalkeeper Adam Federici gave up a howler to Arsenal's Alexis Sanchez in extra time, gifting the London club a 2-1 victory. While its Championship campaign has been disappointing, the FA Cup appearance in the semifinals was the club's best performance in the tournament since 1927.
After 90 minutes, Reading was even with Arsenal and had several chances to win the game. Danny Williams had an open shot late in regular time but shanked his effort. Even with that, it was a solid outing from Williams who did well defensively to limit Arsenal’s opportunities. His multiple injuries of the past year now look like a distant memory.
Grossman scores dramatic winner
Cole Grossman’s 87th-minute game-winner for Stabaek takes the cake among Americans in Europe.
Stabaek and Viking were scoreless late in the game when the St. Louis native took advantage of a poor clearance to hit a beautiful long-range left-footed blast for a 1-0 lead. The win gave Bradley’s team a promising early season win in Norway’s top flight.
Aron Johannsson assists
In the 65th minute, Nemanja Gudelj gave Alkmaar a 3-1 lead when he capitalized on an Aron Johannsson assist after the U.S. national team forward made a nice move into the box on the right side.
With three weeks to go in the season, AZ Alkmaar are likely to be involved in a playoff series for a Europa League spot.
Johnsen opens scoring account
In Bulgaria, North Carolina native Bjorn Maars Johnsen opened his scoring account for Litex Lovech when he scored the opening goal in a 3-1 loss to league leaders Ludogorets.
On the play the 23-year-old forward made nice use of his six-foot-four frame to head home a looping ball into the box. The loss leaves Litex even on points for the final Europa league spot in Bulgaria. Fortunately for Litex, its next three games will be at home and in total, four of the final six games of the season will be at home.
'Gladbach Charging Ahead
There was good news and bad news for Borussia Monchengladbach over the weekend. On Friday, it played to a scoreless draw against Eintracht Frankfurt and U.S. national team midfielder Fabian Johnson played 90 minutes before being substituted out in stoppage time. The draw saw the club fall to fourth place in the Bundesliga but the point it earned gave it a 12-point cushion over Augsburg and Schalke.
That means that Monchengladbach remain undefeated when Johnson starts a game. It also means that if Monchengladbach wins its next game against Wolfsburg and both Augsburg and Schalke stumble, the club can clinch a spot in the Champions League qualifying stages next season.
