UNITED STATES NATIONAL TEAM winger Joe Gyau enjoyed a memorable day on Wednesday as he made his first-team debut for Borussia Dortmund, coming on as a 74th-minute substitute in a 2-2 draw against Vfb Stuttgart.

For Gyau, who turned 22 last week, it has been a September of milestones beginning with earning his first cap with the United States national team on September 3rd in a 1-0 win over the Czech Republic. Following the end of the international break, Gyau made Borussia Dortmund’s bench on two occasions even though he was an unused substitute.

On Wednesday, Borussia Dortmund head coach Jurgen Klopp turned to Gyau in the second half with Dortmund trailing Stuttgart 2-1. While Gyau did not have a hand in the equalizer, he had some very promising moments in completing eight of nine passes in his 16 minutes on the field.

Gyau has been in Europe for several years now, having officially joined Hoffenheim shortly before his 18th birthday. He featured for the club’s youth team and made his professional debut during during a loan to St. Pauli in the 2.Bundesliga. Earlier this year, Gyau made his Bundesliga debut for Hoffenheim.

Gyau is not the only U.S. international to play for Borussia Dortmund’s first team. Jovan Kirvoski played for the club when it won the Champions League in 1997. While Kirvoski did not play in the Champions League Final, he did play in the Intercontinential Cup (the predecessor to the Club World Cup) in a 2-0 win over Cruziero.

Borussia Dortmund is historically one of Germany’s strongest teams but has struggled this season and now sits in eighth place with a 2-1-2 record. On Saturday, it will visit 14th place Schalke.
