AFTER PLAYING 90 MINUTES for the U.S. national team on Sunday in a 2-0 win over Panama, Jermaine Jones will undergo surgery on Tuesday and is set to miss at least a few weeks of the New England Revolution preseason.

A New England Revolution spokesperson told ASN today that Jermaine Jones will have surgery on Tuesday to repair a sports hernia. It was also added that a complete timeline for his recovery would not be known until the procedure is complete. On Instagram, Jones said he will miss a “few weeks.”

Jones, 33, has been a regular for the U.S. national team since 2010 when he filed a change of association with FIFA to play for the United States over his native Germany. During his time with the German club Schalke Jones played in the Champions League on several occasions. He also has played for Eintracht Frankfurt, Bayer Leverkusen, Blackburn, and Besiktas.

Following a successful 2014 World Cup during which Jones was arguably the best American field player, he made the move to Major League Soccer. Initially he was set to join the Chicago Fire—his team of choice. Due to allocation rules, however, New England showed interest late in the proceedings and Jones ended up with the REvolution via a blind draw. League commissioner Don Garber would later say it was a situation he wished the league handled better.

Jones made the most in his half season with New England and he helped guide the club to the MLS Cup finals where it lost to the Galaxy 2-1 in extra time. This season New England is again expected to contend for the title and Jones figures to be an integral part.
