Hot or Not: Jack Mac, Como Se Dice 'On Fire'?

The Philadelphia Union forward continues to bring his game to higher levels, while an old American stand by looks excellent as well. Also, there's trouble over the border and an 'Quake ain't shaking.

Who’s Hot?
Jack McInerney: The American Chicharito? Maybe. But you don’t have to get into comparisons to know Jack McInerney is on a tear. This weekend he notched two goals to bring him to four in the past three matches. His goals showed he can score in more ways than one. Will he be able to stay hot and land a spot on Jurgen Klinsmann’s Gold Cup roster? He’s at the very least on the radar now.

Clint Dempsey: Maybe picking the second player in the ASN 100 right after he scores is a bit predictable, but Dempsey didn’t leave us much choice. He’s scored three goals in the past fortnight, earning Man of the Match in many’s minds for spurring Tottenham to a 3-1 win against Manchester City and attempting to drag Spurs to Europa League victory with a brace prior to that match. Yes, it took some time, but Clint Dempsey is settling in nicely. With a favorable fixture list to close out the season, he might be settling into the Champions League next season.

Who’s Not?
The TJ duo: Joe Corona dropped to the bench for backsliding Club Tijuana this weekend, but he and national teammate Edgar Castillo will both miss Saturday’s trip to San Luis after picking up red cards. Corona’s was a harsh direct red just 18 minutes after coming on in to the 2-1 loss to Morelia. Castillo let his anger get the better of himself and was sent off after two yellow cards in stoppage time. The incidents start just after the 5:00 mark. Now the key pair, plus star forward Duvier Riascos who has accumulated too many yellow cards, are suspended for the penultimate match of the Clausura. Even if los Xolos get a victory, a lot of things will have to fall in place for the team to make the playoffs.

Bobby Convey: It’s never good when your appearance on the pitch prompts the team beat writer to tweet about your presence on the squad. This one came next on the timeline. But social media aside, it really had been a while since the once up-and-coming winger last appeared for Sporting in a March 9 loss to Toronto. Believe it or not, Convey is still under 30, and there was a little bit of chatter that he could make some sort of national team roster. That doesn’t seem to be too likely after his cameo against LA failed to inject any energy in a 2-0 loss.
