RUMORS HAVE SWIRLED around U.S. international Geoff Cameron in recent weeks, with reports suggesting that he could be moving away from Stoke City ahead of this weekend’s transfer deadline. Now, the U.S. international is in the news again due an injury he suffered in yesterday’s 3-0 Capital One Cup win over Portsmouth.

Cameron, 29, earned his first start of the season for Stoke against Portsmouth and played in his preferred central midfield position. Unfortunately the Massachusetts native was forced out of the game in the 38th minute due to a strained side muscle. Today American Soccer Now learned Cameron may miss several weeks of action.

"The manager [Mark Hughes] has just spoken to the media ahead of our game against Manchester City and was asked about Geoff,” Stoke City press officer Fraser Nicholson informed ASN via email. “According to the manager, he has a slight strain and could be out for a couple of weeks.”

This news could become a hurdle for prospective teams looking to acquire Cameron's services. It also has implications for the United States national team, which is scheduled to play the Czech Republic in Prague on September 3.

Strikers Aron Johannsson and Terrence Boyd are already out with injuries, and without Cameron there are few top-tier American talents available for the friendly. This could force national team coach Jurgen Klinsmann to call in more Major League Soccer players than previously planned.
