SOMETIMES A CHANGE of scenery can solve a lot of problems. For Bobby Wood, his recent move to Erzgebirge Aue is paying immediate dividends.

Wood, 22, enjoyed his best game in years today when he scored twice for Erzgebirge Aue in a crucial 3-2 away win over sixth place Fortuna Dusseldorf. The win pulled Aue out of the 2.Bundesliga relegation zone.

To say Wood’s last 20 months at 1860 Munich have been difficult would be an major understatement. The Honolulu native has not scored since May 19, 2013 and he was benched from the first team since October. To the surprise of many, he was called in to January camp with the U.S. national team and there he complained to the media about how 1860 was making it difficult for him to transfer.

At one point Wood was a top youth prospect for U.S. youth national teams but a series of knee injuries plagued him starting at U-20 World Cup qualifying in 2011 and it took him nearly two years to recover.

Wood left U.S. national team camp early to secure a move to Erzgebirge Aue and he was named to the starting lineup in his first appearance on February 6th in a 2-0 win over RB Leipzing. Today’s win was Aue’s third straight and second with Wood in the starting lineup.

Wood opened the scoring in the 15th minute when he finished off a pass from Montenegro U-21 attacker Stefan Mugoša.

Then in the 31st minute, Wood gave Aue a 2-0 lead when he converted a nice setup from Patrick Schönfeld.
