It took a lighting storm, but the American U-20s finally lost at the Dallas Cup. River Plate defeated Tab Ramos' side 3-2 in the final. After a long week, the Americans were tired. “To be honest we were out of gas,” the head coach said after the match. “I think for the most part, we aren’t used to playing this many competitive games and our players aren’t in the environments where they get lots of games like this. And especially against South American teams who play all the time.”
Speaking of the yoots, Ramos called 21 players into a five-day camp for the new U-21 team. Luis Gil, Shane O’Neill, and Jose Villarreal highlight the list that includes 13 MLSers and four from Liga MX.
Jozy Altidore got back in the 18 for Sunderland on Saturday, came on as a second-half substitute, was tripped in the penalty area, and contributed to the Black Cats' game-winning goal over Chelsea. (Yes, that Chelsea.) Does that surprising sequence of events influence your P-O-V on J-O-Z? We'd like to know.
MLSSoccer.com examines the affect bringing David Regis had on the failed effort World Cup 1998 effort. The bottom line: Regis wasn't to blame for the disastrous showing, but his last-second inclusion certainly didn't help. Alexi Lalas: "Regis came with a better pedigree, but we’d never seen him play. We’d be standing there with our arms crossed thinking, ‘You’d better be better than what we have.’ We thought we were pretty good. We were thinking, ‘Why do we need this?’” Are you listening Jurgen Klinsmann?
Hey Klinsmann, break down the striker situation for us, will you?
Would you like to know about Univision's extensive World Cup plans? "In recent months, Univision has brought on veteran play-by-play announcer Luis Omar Tapia and color analyst Hristo Stoichkov, a Barcelona legend who played in MLS for Chicago and D.C. Additional analysts for the World Cup will include Argentine-Italian Mauro Camoranesi, Mexican legend Ramon Ramirez and former U.S. national team stalwart Marcelo Balboa. It will be a truly global cast for a truly global event. Univision's push for audience isn't just coming on television. It's also coming online, and to a degree that the network has never done before. Every game of the World Cup will be streamed online via Univision's website and mobile and tablet apps."
