ASN Morning Read: The More Things Change...

The United States men's national team opened 2015 in the same way they ended 2014: with a loss; but hey, another midfielder is coming back to Major League Soccer; and Freddy Adu might, too.

  • Oops. Would you like to rate the players?

  • The 3-5-2? Well...: "The experiment was never going to go perfectly, and it didn’t: There was too much space at times between Jermaine Jones and Matt Besler in the back three, which led to Chile’s first goal, and Jones’ forays up the field led to two occasions in which the ball was stripped off his foot to create scoring chances. But Shea and DeAndre Yedlin were effective from an attacking perspective: Shea pushed high and scored off a terrific ball from Besler early, and Yedlin showed he can be smart as well as fast with his part on Altidore’s goal along with Mix Diskerud. Shea and Yedlin gave up some space behind them defensively, but this was largely a promising formation debut.

  • But no worries, the Americans have another game soon, taking on Panama February 8. Who would you like to see in the lineup? Make your own.

  • Sacha Kljestan returns to the Major League Soccer fold: "The New York Red Bulls have agreed to terms with Belgian side Anderlecht for the transfer of U.S. Men’s National Team midfielder Sacha Kljestan. New York completed the move by using the top spot in the MLS allocation order, which the club acquired via trade with Montreal on Tuesday."
  • Do it, Adu: "Freddy Adu, whose sputtering soccer career has taken him from Turkey to Brazil and many outposts in between since turning pro at age 14, has received tryout offers from two MLS clubs, the Insider learned Wednesday. Sources familiar with the situation declined to identify the clubs but said none of his former MLS employers (D.C. United, Real Salt Lake and the Philadelphia Union) are interested. The offers probably will not stand much longer, however, as teams move closer to finalizing rosters ahead of the regular season commencing in early March."

  • Zach Steffen, zen master: "I just watch the players as they walk up. I look to see if they are going to look one way. Usually if they look one way then they are going to go the other. I look at their body shape when they’re running up to the ball. It’s really just watching the player. It’s kind of a mind game at the same time."
