ASN Morning Read: Sad Emoticons for FIFA

It has not been a good day for Sepp Blatter, who watches as the organization he led for so long continues to descend into chaos. Or maybe that's a good thing for him. Who knows. Zardes to Europe?

  • "Top Officials Arrested in Pre-Dawn Raid at Zurich Hotel": "More than a dozen people were expected to be charged, law enforcement officials said, nearly doubling the size of an already huge case that has upended FIFA, soccer’s multibillion-dollar governing body... The Justice Department confirmed in a news release that Alfredo Hawit of Honduras and Juan Ángel Napout of Paraguay were among those charged. Hawit is the president of Concacaf, the regional confederation that includes North and Central America and the Caribbean. Napout is the president of Conmebol, the South American confederation. Both are FIFA vice presidents and members of the powerful executive committee."

  • Yeah they have:
  • While we are here: "After losing sponsors including Emirates, Sony, Castrol, Continental and Johnson & Johnson in wake of the widespread corruption scandal surrounding the governing body’s leadership at the highest levels, FIFA will lose around £67million, more than $100 million this year. FIFA has not reported a financial loss since 2001, when marketing partner ISL went bankrupt."

  • Yeah he was:

  • Not done yet: "Soccer’s world governing body will on Thursday discuss expanding the number of teams at the World Cup to 40 from 32 starting in 2026, a radical change to the planet’s most popular sporting event. The switch appears as a line item buried under sweeping governance reforms at FIFA... Simply adding one team per group would tack on an extra 32 games and swell the tournament by more than 50%."

  • Good talk. See you out there:
