For some reason, the Philadelphia Union reportedly decided to pay Maurice Edu $1.2 million to play for them. Which is totally nuts. Which is the reason MLS, having NASL flashbacks, reportedly nixed the deal. Which is, perhaps, an abuse of power. But still. $1.2 million for Edu? That's 400 percent more than Kyle Beckerman makes and a least a couple hundred thou more than he made at Rangers and just a terrible, terrible idea all around.
The last word, for now, on the Michael Bradley deal:
Juan Agudelo, who has been very patient throughout this entire ordeal, finally signs with Stoke City and will go out on a six-month loan.
The United States squad, meanwhile, is in Brazil for a 12-day training session. Your day one diary: "The team spent the morning in the performance fitness room doing workouts, then it was out to Barra Funda, the world-class training ground of Sao Paulo FC and the site of the team’s base camp for the World Cup. The beautiful surroundings are matched by a fantastic field and facilities. The session itself lasted nearly 90 minutes with temperatures hovering around 90 degrees, giving the players a taste of the climate to come in June for the group matches."
Major League Soccer is on the verge of signing a huge new television contract, which at least one publication is calling life-changing. (And they are wrong.) According to reports, ESPN and Fox will give the league $70 million a year over the next eight years. That's about $3 million per team or $.1 million more than the 2013 salary cap.
