  • Jonah Freedman takes a look at guys who could be “The Next ______.” Toronto FC sophomore Luis Silva is Freedman’s “Next Clint Dempsey,” citing the youngster’s deceptive speed and attacking prowess. I like the Perry Kitchen-Kyle Beckerman comparison: “Like Beckerman, he’s probably looking at a career of being a fringe US national team player after a productive youth-team career.”

  • Stoke City is coming to the U.S. this summer to play two friendlies. One is against Brek Shea’s former club FC Dallas and the other will be a “high-profile match” to be announced next week. “If there is one market right now where we can develop our own profile, then it has to be America due to the presence of three U.S. internationals in our squad,” Stoke chief executive Tony Scholes said. He also notes the Premier League’s TV deal with NBC.

  • Ever-busy Brad Guzan talks about how he deals with the barrage of goals Aston Villa has surrendered this season. “If they’ve scored one, the mentality has to be don’t let them score two, and if they’ve scored two, don’t let them score three,” Guzan said. “You have to put it behind yourself and focus on the next one because if you let it affect you you are going to start making mistakes, and next thing you know it can get out of hand quite quickly.” Villa has given up the second-most goals in the Premier League this season.

  • MLS hopes to announce plans for a stadium in Queens for a 20th team in four to six weeks. “If we get this done, it will be in Flushing Meadow Park. There is no Plan B,” commissioner Don Garber said. The league hopes to have an agreement with the New York Mets’ owners to use the parking lots at nearby Citi Field. That’s probably good for all parties because the Mets need money. The league, however, will not use goal-line technology in 2013. Can't say that's surprising.
