  • To kick off 2014, the U.S. will play South Korea in Carson, Calif. on Saturday, Feb. 1. It’s the first time the two teams have met since the 1-1 draw in the 2002 World Cup. Smart scheduling by U.S. Soccer, giving the January camp players a friendly against a World Cup opponent rather than say, Canada. No offense to Canada.

For good measure, here’s Clint Mathis’ goal from the 2002 World Cup:
  • As he continues to try to break into Hoffenheim’s first team, 21-year-old Joe Gyau told Goal.com he doesn’t see himself leaving Germany any time soon. Gyau is Hoffenheim II’s leading scorer with five goals in 15 matches in the Regionalliga, Germany’s fourth tier, after spending last season on loan with St. Pauli in the second tier. "Coming back to play with the second team, in the beginning I was a little bummed about it," Gyau said. “Coming back, it knocked me down for a little bit. I was a little sad about it. But I couldn't keep wallowing in my sorrows for too long. It wouldn't have helped anybody."

  • ESPN FC has a comprehensive guide to the 12 host cities for the World Cup. If you’re going (or even if you’re not), take a look through so you seem like somewhat of an expert come June.

  • After a tumultuous 2013 for Mexico, Miguel Herrera will coach El Tri in the World Cup, and perhaps beyond. “The plan is that Miguel Herrera will be in Brazil and will continue for Russia 2018,” national team director Héctor González Iñárritu said. Herrera didn’t bring in European-based players for the playoff with New Zealand, so it’ll be interesting to see how some of the bigger names get integrated in his system.
