The United States men's national team takes the field in Carson, California while the rest of the soccer world continues apace as usual; World Cup qualifying isn't that far away; Mix Diskerud is arriving.

  • Your "What Is Jurgen Klinsmann Thinking" January camp update: "Altering the status quo always presents some risks and raises some questions, but Klinsmann proceeded along this path with safety and security in his corner. He now enters this January camp with a mixture of players designed to compete against Chile (Jan. 28 in Rancagua, Chile) and Panama (Feb. 8 in Carson, Calif.) and establish a framework for the Olympic side. It will take some time to render a verdict on the utility of the approach, but its digression from the normal service adds another layer of intrigue as camp opens."

  • The Women's World Cup will be played on turf. Let's let Abby Wambach, who did not win player of the year, talk: "I think FIFA has made their decision and they are sticking to it. The powers that be, the logistics, the timing — it just may not happen... I know I'm going to be a heck of a lot more sore after the tournament, that's for sure. It is sad because it will be my last World Cup and I really, really would love it to be on grass."

  • Yes? No? Anyone? "New York City FC plans to formally announce the signing of U.S. international midfielder Mix Diskerud on Tuesday, according to Major League Soccer sources.

MLS sources confirmed to ESPN FC that a deal has been struck to import Diskerud as NYCFC's third big-name signing alongside Spanish striker David Villa and England midfield stalwart Frank Lampard, whose arrival at the club has been delayed until July."
  • WORLD CUP QUALIFYING BEGINS THIS YEAR: "Jurgen Klinsmann‘s U.S. squad, along with Costa Rica, Mexico, Honduras, Panama and Trinidad & Tobago, will not enter until this November when the field is pared to 12 teams. The volume remains the same for the Americans and the other five top seeds: 16 matches. What is different is the timetable. Because of fewer official dates on the FIFA calendar and CONCACAF teams competing in the 2016 Copa America, the U.S. schedule will begin seven months earlier than the previous World Cup cycle. Had the qualifiers not begun so early, the Americans would have played friendlies during those FIFA windows." That is crazy. And crazy awesome. Games that matter!

  • That's... more than I would have expected:
