ASN Morning Read: Expanding on Expansion

Major League Soccer just won't quit when it comes to bringing on more teams, and that's a good thing. A very good thing indeed. Should Zlatan move to the United States? (Yes.)

  • MLS confirms what we already knew, which is that Minnesota is almost certainly going to become the league's 24th team. The interesting part about the release, however, is this line: "Over the course of 2015, we plan to evaluate potential expansion beyond 24 clubs." That makes sense given the interest from places like Sacramento. Two dozen was always an arbitrary number. Let's get to 28 then 32 then 40. Two divisions. Make it happen, Don Garber.

  • Highlights from the U-17 victory over Jamaica that sent the squad to the World Cup:
  • Hi Zlatan, come to America, please.

  • What did you think of MLS last weekend? How about this: "New York City FC’s raucous home debut, both on and off the field, was part of an interesting second week of MLS action that saw FC Dallas continue to show it might be for real in the west, Los Angeles show it still has a champions’ heart; while folks in Chicago were painfully reminded they are in for another long year."

  • An analysis of Yankee Stadium as a soccer venue: "There are few strengths but great opportunities for NYCFC to play in Yankee Stadium. The weaknesses and threats are larger obstacles for NYCFC and the Yankees to overcome. There are far more questions than answers right now in how successful NYCFC will be in their first home ground. The club and its supporters are guests in their neighbor’s house, for the time being, and all will try to make the best of the situation until the can get into a home they can call their own."

  • Your final NYCFC thought, courtesy of ASN Friend Leander Schaerlaeckens: "It was, all in all, a night that raised a giant middle finger at our preconceived notions of what MLS should, and more importantly shouldn’t, look like."
