Edgar Castillo suffered a triple fracture in his face on Saturday, but somehow still managed to stay on the field for the match’s final 72 minutes. He underwent surgery and Tijuana says he’ll be out for 10 days and reevaluated in two weeks. This timetable makes it doubtful he’ll be able to participate in this month’s qualifiers although some Omar Gonzalez-style headgear might allow him to cut some time off that recovery. If nothing else, Castillo gets major brownie points for playing through a broken face.
In other injury news, Jay DeMerit had surgery on his torn Achilles, which generally takes more than four months to recover from. “The thing with Jay is that Jay’s a bit of a freak athlete,” Whitecaps manager Martin Rennie said. “He’s one of those guys who always tests really well, always recovers really well. “ DeMerit suffered the injury just six minutes into Saturday’s season opener.
