ASN Morning Read: Brad Has Many Thoughts

And they are not painful at all. The former United States national team goalkeeper sounds off on Klinsmann v. MLS, while an American defender is up for an award, and the boys hang out in London.

  • Brad Friedel thinks MLS is just fine: "Is it good for one of our American players to sign with Real Madrid? No, because they'll play zero. It's better that they stay in MLS and play 100 percent of the time. That's how you develop, that's how you get better. You just have to make sure that you never in your career, no matter where you play, become complacent."

  • Steve Davis makes an interesting point: "We certainly should have figured out and accepted by now that he’s not working off templates. Klinsmann, more than most managers, chooses players (and positions and tactics, too) by instinct rather than pattern. He’s like the Pinball Wizard of a song that came out in Klinsmann’s youth: it’s about a “deaf, dumb and blind kid” who plays the old arcade staple “by intuition,” performing by think, feel and gut reaction."

  • Lee Nguyen last played for the United States national team in 2007. If he gets on the field on Friday, he'll have gone more than seven years between caps, the third-longest gap ever.

  • I'm just gonna quote here: "Tim Ream has been named as finalist for the Northwest Championship Player of the Year award at next week’s MBNA Northwest Football Awards. The versatile USA international proved himself a stalwart in Wanderers’ defence last season, making 45 appearances for the Whites in all competitions. Ream, whose efforts saw him named as club and Bolton Wanderers Supporters’ Association Player of the Year, will be looking to follow in the footsteps of club captain Jay Spearing, who won the award last year."

  • If you're going to cheat, be smart enough not to get caught. Or do it in FIFA, where nothing except money matters.

  • Here's a happy photo:

  • And here's a loooong oral history of American soccer and the Internet. Message boards went cray after Paul Caligiuri's goal against Trinidad and Tobago.
