Aron Johannsson scored (surprise!) in AZ’s 1-0 home win over Anzhi in the first leg of the Europa League round of 16. The goalkeeper got a hand on Johannsson’s penalty kick, but it skipped over the line anyway. Of course it did.
In London, Brad Friedel was on the bench for Tottenham’s 3-1 loss to Benfica.
The U.S. dropped one spot in the latest FIFA rankings, slipping to No. 14. Not that it matters. Except when it does.
With tomorrow being Michael Bradley's first MLS game since 2005, KickTV put together a nice video called "A Child of MLS," taking a look back at Bradley's roots in the league. Check it out:
MLSsoccer.com has an oral history of Clint Dempsey’s life and career. Says a childhood friend: "Clint's had a lot of success and met a lot of different people and been a lot of different places, but he doesn’t let a lot of people in unless he knows who you are and what you’re about. That’s why he’s kept a lot of his friends close to him, because we’ve been there since the beginning.”
Back at Stoke City after his loan at Barnsley was cut short, Brek Shea explained himself a bit. "I had an altercation with a gentleman and I think the fans took it that I had a go at the club, but I was only frustrated with one guy. I'm over that and happy to be back at Stoke,” Shea said. “I've had a lot of experiences, whether good or bad, and I've got to learn from them.”
John D. Halloran examines what went wrong for the U.S. women in their disastrous Algarve Cup campaign.
Mix Diskerud wants a piece of Usain Bolt if his soccer career comes to fruition.
Happy Pi Day everybody!
