Adams is back, Gioacchini scores for Caen, Lennon & Robles on the move
There was no shortage of news in American soccer to start the week and ASN is here with a morning update to look at it all - starting with the long-awaited return of Tyler Adams to Leipzig's training field.
THERE WAS A wave of news to come out on Monday night and Tuesday morning – regarding both player movement, return from injury, and on field performances. For many fans of different teams, it was all positive news.
Here is a brief run-down
After various reports last week that this was coming, RB Leipzig formally announced that U.S. international Tyler Adams is back to full training to the club after lengthy absence due to adductor and foot injuries.
The former New York Red Bull missed several games towards the end of last season, although he returned for the German Cup final. He missed preseason and is only now returning to training with the full team.
After making the move last year from New York to Leipzig, Adams hasn’t missed a beat and his transition has been smooth as he began starting immediately in the defensive midfield position.
But Adams will now be trying to break into a RB Leipzig team that is different from last season. Ralf Rangnik is no longer the coach and was replaced by Julian Nagelsmann in June.
RB Leipzig is still successful and is in second place, trailing leaders Borussia Monchengladbach by just a point after having won four in a row. It also sits atop its Champions League group with just one game remaining.
It remains to be seen when Adams, 20, will play his first minutes of the season. RB Leipzig has five games remaining before the Bundesliga winter break – starting this Saturday at home against Hoffenheim. Next week it will travel to face Lyon in the Champions League and that will be followed by two away games in the Bundesliga against Fortuna Dusseldorf and Borussia Dortmund. Its final game of 2019 will be at home against Augsburg on December 21.
In Ligue 2 action on Monday, Kansas City-born forward Niko Gioacchini, 19, scored the game winning goal for SM Caen in a 1-0 victory over Nancy. For the American teenager, his 62nd minute goal was his second goal in six appearances for the club.
Unfortunately for Gioacchini, he was subbed out just minutes later with what was reported to be an adductor injury.
Gioacchini is an interesting prospect to watch but the timing of his emergence as a professional makes his U.S. involvement tricky at the moment. Born in 2000, he is too old for the U.S. U-20 team. Playing for the U-23 team is also tough since there are no international windows left where he can play with that team before Olympic qualifying. He is also not ripe for a full national team call-up having played just a few games for a lower-half Ligue 2 team.
For now, he just needs to focus on his club form and his international future will resolve itself. He is also eligible for the national teams of Italy and Jamaica.
Two well-known American players were on the move in this busy MLS offseason as veteran goalkeeper Luis Robles signed for Inter Miami ahead of its inaugural season and U.S. U-23 winger/fullback Brooks Lennon moved from Real Salt Lake to Atlanta United.
Both moves are very interesting. Robles is the perfect veteran to have on an expansion team. His a model professional and a proven leader. He was the cornerstone of a very successful era for the New York Red Bulls and should be a calm influence on a new team that will be finding its way in 2019.
Lennon, meanwhile, will now have the opportunity to be surrounded by some of the best talent in the league. He is an outstanding crosser and now he will have the opportunity to deliver balls to Josef Martinez and play under a veteran coach like Frank DeBoer. He joins in a trade which sent Real Salt Lake $150,000 of GAM and $150,000 of TAM
“Brooks is a versatile young player and we are pleased to add him to our club,” Atlanta United Vice President and Technical Director Carlos Bocanegra said. “In addition to his vast experience on the international level with U.S. Youth National Teams, he has proven to be a reliable starter in MLS. He can play both fullback and wing positions and we expect him to have an integral role in our long-term plans.”
